You will find 3 options on this tour, where you can combine 2 of the 3 options, Lisbon and Sintra, Lisbon and Mafra or Sintra and Mafra, the program for each individual day and location is as follows.
Lisbon Day:
The point where we start the tour depends on where your hotel is but here is a summary of locations and sights we will cover. Whenever possible we will start with Edward VII park and liberty avenue where all the luxurious commerce is located. Then will go to the downtown area's Baixa District, the squares of Restauradores and Rossio, and the Cathedral of Lisbon, stopping for photos and, time permitting, a visit to the interior of the church.
The next stop is at the castle hill with the Alfama neighborhood and then the Graça quarter for some of the most beautiful views of the city.
The 20th-century National Pantheon is the next point of interest, before proceeding to Commerce Square and Chiado, where you can enjoy the opposite view of the castle and wander around in the more commercial area for a while and perhaps have lunch in one of the many places available in the neighborhood, before heading to the Belém area where the Monuments related to the Portuguese Sea Expansion are located. Jerónimos Monastery, the Tower of Belém and the Discoveries Monument are the most emblematic monuments of the Portuguese discoveries era. We will stop for photos and visit briefly one or more of these monuments.
Finally, you'll be taken to the Expo 98 area, a totally new area of the city with museums, gardens, and a great relationship with the River Tagus. Return to the hotel at approximately 17.30
Sintra Day:
When the focus of the trip is to visit the Pena Palace, this will be our very first stop. As tickets and visits are timed, be sure to let us know that you plan to visit this palace so we can design the itinerary and advise you on the time to purchase tickets. After the Pena Palace, we will go to the center of Sintra, where you can enjoy the traditional pastries at a local tea house, or you can pay a short visit to the Village Palace, an 11th-century palace that has been transformed throughout the centuries and is now one of the most emblematic places of Sintra or the Regaleira Palace with its impressive gardens.
After this, you can have lunch in Sintra or we will proceed to another location for lunch depending on your preferences. On our way out of the village, we will still see the Regaleira, Monserrate Palace and Park, and also the 18th-century palace of Seteais. Then head to the Cabo da Roca, the most western point of Europe, with its beautiful landscapes. Next, pass by the beach of Guincho, heading towards the Hell's Mouth, a natural cluster of caves and tunnels in the sea, and then the Royal Village of Cascais. From here, you will take the scenic coastal route back to Lisbon where we will enter through Belém and see the main monuments in the area.
Mafra Day:
The objective of the day will be to show you Mafra, with it's 18th century national palace and it's surrounding park, also classified as a national monument and World Heritage by Unesco and Ericeira, a beautifully preserved fishing village home to some of Portugal's best waves. As this is a private tour, you will have the freedom to rearrange your tour how you see fit. Below is the standard itinerary for a full day tour (the half day tour will necessarily focus more in the Palace and will have less detail and locations):
After your pick up we will proceed directly to Mafra, where we will arrive after a 45min drive. Our first stop will be at the center of Mafra, where we can visit the Palace and Basilica (approximately 1.30h for the whole visit). After that and depending on the time of the year and program availability we will proceed to the Tapada, a park on the back of the palace that served as hunting grounds for the King and Royal family, or we will proceed directly to Ericeira.
After the visit to the tapada, we will proceed to Ericeira where we can lunch on one of the many typical fish and seafood restaurants of the area, but not before passing by a small model village made by a local ceramist, which represents a typical village of the beginning of the XX century in Portugal. Ericeira is also of the best Portuguese surfing spots, so upon arrival and depending on the season we may see some surfers and some nice waves. After lunch we will drive back taking the coastal road, if possible and time allows passing by Azenhas do Mar, a beautiful village carved on a cliff and a quick passage by Cabo da Roca, the most western point of Europe.
